Lecture 5 - Personality Disorders (15:48 min)

By: Paul Stevenson. Personality disorders are mental health conditions that manifest in the way someone thinks, feels and acts about others, and in how they perceive reality. The topic of personality disorders is something of a controversy in recent years. The DSM Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a guide created and used in the United States by mental health professionals slots human personalities into ten categories. The argument is that people are too complex to so easily label. To give someone the psychiatric diagnosis of a personality disorder can lead to stigma for the individual and their family.

Antisocial personality disorder ASPD or APD is a personality disorder characterized by a long term pattern of disregard for, or violation of, the rights of others. A low moral sense or conscience is often apparent, as well as a history of crime, legal problems, or impulsive and aggressive behavior. Dissocial personality disorder DPD , a similar or equivalent concept, is defined in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems ICD , which includes antisocial personality disorder in the diagnosis. Both manuals provide similar criteria for diagnosing the disorder. Antisocial personality disorder is defined by a pervasive and persistent disregard for morals, social norms , and the rights and feelings of others.

This course will highlight the most interesting experiments within the field of psychology, discussing the implications of those studies for our understanding of the human mind and human behavior. We will explore the brain and some of the cognitive abilities it supports like memory, learning, attention, perception and consciousness. We will examine human development - both in terms of growing up and growing old - and will discuss the manner in which the behavior of others affect our own thoughts and behavior. Finally we will discuss various forms of mental illness and the treatments that are used to help those who suffer from them. The fact of the matter is that humans routinely do amazing things without appreciating how interesting they are. However, we are also routinely influenced by people and events without always being aware of those influences.

It goes without saying that there is something majorly wrong with someone who has the capacity to commit murder. In the case of serial killer Ted Bundy, who's recently recaptured nationwide attention 30 years after his execution, there were, well, many things wrong with him. While there are no known reports of Ted Bundy seeing an actual therapistóthat is, until the court required a psychiatric evaluation by Al Carlisle, PhD , to determine his aptitude for violenceópsychology experts have studied the infamous rapist and murderer for decades. What's fascinated them most? His ability to carry on a double lifeói.
