The Best Philippine Short Stories of the Twentieth Century by Isagani R. Cruz

An Anthology of Philippine Fiction in English
The modern form of the short story is magnificently showcased in this anthology of fifty selections in English written by Filipinos in the last century. Edited by literary critic Isagani R. Cruz, this collection spans from 1925 to 1998. In this book readers will meet both famous and unfamiliar writers in both conventional and unexpected renditions of the genre. Although many of the stories are acknowledged masterpieces, the editor also chose stories on the basis of their ability to represent a particular author or decade. The stories of the 25 men and women writers represented here depict a vast gamut of human experience and emotions that, collectively, produce a stunning portrait of Philippine life and society. Dr. Cruz is a professor of literature at De Lasalle University, where he is also publisher of DLSU Press. He is himself a multi-awarded author and columnist, and the founding chair of the Manila Critics Circle. In a country where English has been the medium of instruction since the turn of the century, it is but fitting for the Philippines to share with the rest of the world its own vibrant treasury of short fiction. This richly satisfying collection represents the very best to emerge out of the Philippines in our century.

In February , our firm launched a photo-story contest asking students to capture images reflecting Filipino values and to write the story behind the photos they have taken. Through the photo-story contest, we can help raise Filipino youth awareness of our values which are changing amidst all that is going on around us. We recognize that our values, in part, may be the cause of our problems today and can just as well be critical to the solutions we seek as a nation. We would like to discover what our youth deems important and what they see and think our Filipino values are. Some people pushed a truckload to help you study, at least do your part Top

Is Mo Yan man enough for the Nobel? No, these aren't about the likelihood of Mo Yan winning the prestigious honor - that's being taken care of by professional betting houses - but, rather, they're about the worthiness of bestowing the honor on him. The British oddsmaker Nicerrods and betting house Ladbrokes have both put Mo Yan in second place, after Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, as the strongest contenders for this year's recipient of the Nobel kudos. Mo'sresponse is: "I have no opinion". It's an appropriate statement, considering his pen name, which means, "Do not speak". But everyone else, even if remotely connected with the literary scene, has an opinion - often a very strong one. Television personality Cui Yongyuan represents many when he says: "I hope he wins.
