And You Don't Even Know It
Back in , the film gods gave us Billy Elliot , a story about a boy who wanted to break gender stereotypes and be a ballet dancer. Back in sixteen-year-old Jamie New decided he wanted to wear a dress to prom and was told by the school administration he was forbidden to, causing a backlash. In it was broadcast live to cinemas, with screenings now finally occurring internationally. Jamie John McCrea is out and proud, and for the most part is surrounded by supportive allies who celebrate him and his dreams. There is bullying, yes, as well as parental rejection, but the tone is optimistic, and unlike Billy Elliot which seems to use Michael as somewhat of a punchline, Jamie is the hero of the story. When the bastards try to get him down, he throws some sass their way and gets on with it.
The musical is inspired by the television documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16 , directed by Jenny Popplewell. The musical follows a year-old teenager as he overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness to become a drag queen. Miss Hedge, a careers teacher, asks her noisy year eleven class what they want to be when they get older. One student of the class, Jamie New, gets teased about his homosexuality , and reveals to the audience all he wants to be is a drag queen "And You Don't Even Know It". When prompted, Jamie tells the class he wants to be a performer, but Miss Hedge tells him to get real. At Jamie's house, his mum Margaret and family friend Ray are preparing for his sixteenth birthday. When Jamie arrives home, Margaret gives him a card from his dad, with a picture of a race car.

tell the truth and the truth will set you free
There's a clock on the wall and it's moving too slow. It's got hours to kill and a lifetime to go. And I'm holding my breath 'til I hear the last bell. Then I'm coming out hard and I'm giving 'em hell. Cause I'm a superstar and you don't even know it. In a wonder bra and you don't even know it. You're so blah blah and you don't even know it.
This staggeringly enjoyable musical about a teen drag queen transfers triumphantly to London. This new British musical, transferring from the Sheffield Crucible, is the real deal. Inspired by a BBC documentary about a teenager who wanted to be a drag queen, the show follows year-old Jamie on his journey to be himself — out of a classroom in a working-class part of Sheffield, away from the bigotry of a deadbeat dad, and into high heels. It captures the frenetic energy of being a teenager. Every element of this show works beautifully together. His dialogue is punchy, funny and often lands with a sting.
