Didactic books, or books that just simply explain a disability without a good story, are b-o-r-i-n-g, and as a consequence teach nothing. My kids are fortunate to attend a school in which there is an emphasis on teaching kids to value the uniqueness of all children and I have found that reading picture books such as these at home is an excellent way to continue the conversation with them. I focused on diverse fiction books about special needs for this list, but threw in a few picture book biographies, too. The more the merrier. Note: book covers and titles are affiliate links. As a speech language pathologist and parent, I love to use storytelling as an opportunity to initiate meaningful conversations and encourage children to follow their dreams regardless of their disabilities and delays. Happy Dreamer is a wonderful and inspiring book for children with a variety of special needs, but most specifically, those with ADHD. For children with ADHD, sitting still and focusing for long periods of time can be difficult and challenging. Willow is a story about a free-spirited girl named Willow who has a creative imagination. She just wants them to follow the rules and stay within the lines. Explaining a disability to your child or his classmates, friends and young relatives can be a challenge for parents. In my opinion and solely for the purposes of this post it would include any person having difficulties living their lives with the same level of ease as a similar individual their own age. Individuals who struggle physically, mentally, emotionally, to such a degree it limits their movements, senses and activities in their daily lives. In our house, a large section of our shelves are taken up with books. Books are a window into a different world.
