Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley , an year-old orphan girl, who is mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way through life with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town. Since its publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into at least 36 languages. Montgomery wrote numerous sequels, and since her death, another sequel has been published, as well as an authorized prequel. The original book is taught to students around the world. The book has been adapted as films, made-for-television movies, and animated and live-action television series.

With eight books in the series, the saga shaped Montgomery into one of the most successful writers of her generation. The Anne of Green Gables series is still loved by adults and children alike all over the world. Here are some interesting facts about Anne and the life of L. Montgomery: Anne of Green Gables sold 19, copies within the first month and was reprinted 10 times in its first year. One year after the book was released, it had already reached international status; being translated into Swedish in Anne of Green Gables lead to some hefty legal disputes between Montgomery and her publisher L. Montgomery was not subject to profits from her early books, causing quite the dispute between the two.
Needing help on their farm, Green Gables, they apply to adopt a boy from an orphanage. By mistake, however, a red-haired, freckle-faced year-old girl named Anne Shirley is sent to the siblings. While Matthew instantly takes to Anne, Marilla is unsure about keeping her. However, the cheerful and highly imaginative Anne gradually transforms the joyless lives of shy Matthew and prim Marilla, and they come to view her as a daughter. However, not everything about Avonlea is idyllic , and the quick-tempered Anne has two nemeses: the hypercritical Mrs. Impulsive and sometimes mischievous, Anne has many misadventures, such as accidentally dyeing her hair green.
She taught me things I still think about every day. Matthew and his sister Marilla decide to get an orphan boy to help out on their farm and are miffed when, due to a mix-up, Anne arrives instead. Their spoiler alert relationship gave me hope that even swots and misfits could find love. When Gilbert teases her about her hair, Anne breaks a slate over his head. And he takes her anger seriously and respects her for it. But Anne gets her dream dress, and her red hair even, eventually, goes auburn, just as she wished it would. She also — and this is almost revolutionary — thinks everyone has a right to joy.
