Ephrem the Syrian was a Syriac and a prolific Syriac-language Hymnographer and theologian of the 4th century. His works are hailed by Christians throughout the world and many denominations venerate him as a saint. He has been declared a Doctor of the Church in Roman Catholicism. He is especially beloved in the Syriac Orthodox Church.
Ephrem wrote a wide variety of Hymns, poems, and sermons in verse, as well as prose biblical exegesis. These were works of practical theology for the edification of the church in troubled times. So popular were his works, that, for centuries after his death, Christian authors wrote hundreds of pseudepigraphal works in his name. Ephrems works witness to an early form of Christianity in which western ideas take little part. He has been called the most significant of all of the fathers of the Syriac-speaking church tradition.

F aith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. That is what the Bible gives as a definition of faith Hebrews And without faith it is impossible to please God Hebrews Perhaps that is why so many songs have been written about faith. When we see the evidence of our faith , that is something to sing about.
These Hymns are part of " Work in Worship ," a collection of material for work-themed services compiled by David Welbourn. It has been decided to omit hymn numbers since there are often several different editions of the major hymn books. It has been impossible to refer to all hymn books currently in use. If the book used at your church is not included below, it is suggested that you check the index of your book and make a note of the hymns in the following list that are included there. Your books may also contain other suitable hymns not shown in our list. As the list below clearly indicates, no one church's or denomination's books contain all the suitable material that is currently available.
In worship we can speak to God about our work, pray that our daily work may be pleasing to God, and respond to God's continual call to live lives worthy of the calling. The following are songs, hymns, prayers, and readings that give voice to the living out of faith that we call our work or our vocation. We work for more than wages and manage for more than profit so that mutual respect and the just use of goods and skills may shape the workplace. While we earn or profit, we love our neighbors by providing useful products and services. In our global economy we advocate meaningful work and fair wages for all. By faith, we are called, as generations have before and generations will be to come—called to live out our faith through our work. Our vocations are the living out of this faith.

I acknowledge Your Lordship over all that will be spoken, thought, decided and accomplished this day. Lord Jesus, I thank you for the gifts and skill You have deposited in me. I do not take them lightly, but commit to using them responsibly and well.
We have been saved by faith alone In Christ our solid Cornerstone. Herein we stand; no other ground Will e'er be where our hope is found! We thus hereby confess, ""Sola fide! Unmerited, and undeserved, Inheritance in heaven reserved, This grace is ours, amazing, free-- So long our song, and e'er shall be! We thus confess, yea, ""Sola gratia! No council crude, no mortal man Will supersede God's Word and plan; Infallible, fully inspired, It ne'er shall err, nor be expired!
Prayer is an important Christian discipline, and every worship leader needs a good repertoire of worship songs about prayer in their back pocket when the situation calls for it. Many of them communicate truth in thoughtful ways that are missing in some modern worship. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. If the sermon is about the importance of creating a disciplined prayer life, this hymn is a great place to start. It was originally copyrighted and first published in
