Perhaps Cubas most important intellectual figure of the twentieth century, Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980) was a novelist, a classically trained pianist and musicologist, a producer of avant-garde radio programming, and an influential theorist of politics and literature. Best known for his novels, Carpentier also collaborated with such luminaries as Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Georges Bataille, and Antonin Artaud. Although born in Switzerland, he grew up in Havana, Cuba, and was strongly self-identified as Cuban throughout his life. He was jailed and exiled and he lived for many years in France and Venezuela but returned to Cuba after the 1959 revolution. He died in Paris in 1980 and was buried in Havana.

I was incredibly interested in delving into further research of Magical Realism and its origin mainly as it relates to Latin America and within the work of Marquez. This was inspired by the question of whether or not this literary style is something which allows the reader to absorb the difficult and traumatic history of the country. Every source that I began looking into stated it was something which originally had German roots after the influence of Franz Roh who referred to art within this category. However, it became a literary tool within Latin America within the s and began being increased in its use by varying authors after this time. An interesting autobiographical component regarding Marquez which most likely had a large emphasis on his storytelling habits is the fact that he had an intensive relationship with his grandmother growing up who instilled the value of storytelling in him. Storytelling is something that can be naturally extravagant and vivid with imagery — sometimes blurring the lines of reality. Additionally, I see magical realism as an escape for both the audience and the writers who depended upon it heavily to manifest much of their personal lives.
