City of ashes summary by chapter
City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra ClareThis book cost me around 600 dollars.
When Im traveling to and from conventions, I use the airplane time to catch up on my reading. A lot of times this means Im taking the opportunity to read books that have been popular for a while, but that I havent gotten around to. I feel like I should be aware of the landscape.
Anyway, on my way home from Seattle, I had a layover in Minneapolis. I grabbed this book so Id have something to read while I was eating dinner in the airport.
So I ate dinner, and I read the book, and I lost track of time, and I missed my plane.
I ended up having to rent a car and drive the three and a half hours back to Stevens Point.
You win this round, Cassandra Clare....

Clary returns to the Institute after she receives a text message from Isabelle "Izzy" Lightwood, saying that Jace had angered the Inquisitor and has been imprisoned in the Silent City awaiting trial by the Sword to determine if he is telling the truth about whether he is in league with Valentine. While sitting in his cell, chained to the bars, Jace hears something attacking the Silent Brothers and soon discovers that Valentine has come and killed the Silent Brothers to obtain the second Mortal Instrument - the Mortal Sword. Clary, Izzy, and Alec respond to a distress call from the Silent City, only to discover that the Silent Brothers have all been slain. Clary frees Jace using an amplified version of the opening rune that appeared to her amidst her panic. The Inquisitor appears, along with a large group of armed Shadowhunters, and accuses Jace of helping Valentine, since he was supposed to go on trial by the Sword which is now gone.
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon -slaying Shadowhunter , your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves , vampires and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon , who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine , who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father. To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children.

These notes were contributed by members of the GradeSaver community. The book begins by presenting Valentine in a building in Manhattan with a young warlock named Elias. Valentine is left unharmed because of the power the Mortal Cup has and the demon listens to what Valentine says and even calls him master. The attention shifts on Jace and Clary. She is extremely cold towards Jace and even sends her children away to talk with him. Meanwhile, Clary is with Simon at his house when Isabelle calls her.
