Train: Riding the Rails That Created the Modern World-from the Trans-Siberian to the Southwest Chief by Tom ZoellnerA revelatory, entertaining account of the world’s most indispensable mode of transportation
Tom Zoellner loves trains with a ferocious passion. In his new book he chronicles the innovation and sociological impact of the railway technology that changed the world, and could very well change it again.
From the frigid trans-Siberian railroad to the antiquated Indian Railways to the futuristic MagLev trains, Zoellner offers a stirring story of man’s relationship with trains. Zoellner examines both the mechanics of the rails and their engines and how they helped societies evolve. Not only do trains transport people and goods in an efficient manner, but they also reduce pollution and dependency upon oil. Zoellner also considers America’s culture of ambivalence to mass transit, using the perpetually stalled line between Los Angeles and San Francisco as a case study in bureaucracy and public indifference.
Train presents both an entertaining history of railway travel around the world while offering a serious and impassioned case for the future of train travel.

You'll be mesmerized by this region's beauty and allure. We'll take you across the mighty Mississippi through eight states — past wheat fields and ranches, missions and pueblos, mountains and deserts. Carving through curving canyon passages only a few feet wider than the train itself, you'll see spectacular landscapes and pristine vistas not visible from interstate highways. On this century-old railway, you'll be entertained by cowboys, musicians and a mock early s-style train robbery. Return service to Lamy is also provided. Advance reservations are required. Immerse yourself in the stunning geography and iconic images of an old Western.
Has anyone ever taken a tour of the US using the tour company "America by Rail"? What was your experience? Would like to try a train tour but know nothing about train tour travel. They seem to run a good tour. However, in looking at their schedules they do not allow time in any city they visit.
Appropriations Committee emphasizes importance of National Network to Amtrak-served communities.
As we chatted on the station platform in Gallup, N. Like other crew members I asked, she skirted the question. The winds of politics have buffeted Amtrak for most of its 48 years. Like most rail passenger services worldwide, it requires government support to survive, let alone flourish. But for those who ride Amtrak and those who work for the company, was especially worrisome because of rumblings about changes that seemed unwise to me, a train buff.
