How To Paint A Lighthouse Sunset
Start out by knowing what you are going to paint, and drawing the shapes necessary to have a framework to hang your painting on. I used digital reference photos of the Lorain Lighthouse on Lake Erie to draw and cut a cardboard template to size so I could move it around and play with the composition. Once I decided where to draw it, I added the sky and sea areas, and then masked the lighthouse area with liquid frisket. As the frisket dried I played with scribbling in a few sail boats on the horizon to mix things up a bit. Using the Round 8 red sable, I mixed up a medium wash of cerulean blue and after I wet some areas of the sky with clean water I proceeded to paint the sky, varying the intensity and shaping the clouds edges flowing in and out of each other as the wash softened. While this was still damp I added a touch of ivory black to the cerulean to get a silvery gray for the cloud bottoms and added more shape the base of the clouds.
Lighthouses are a protected treasure on the American landscape. It's no wonder many watercolor artists feel compelled to paint them. There are many variations of lighthouse architecture, but, by far, the most popular, at least as a subject for art, is the conical one which tapers at the top with a special, multi windowed room containing the lens or lantern. Reading about how these structures have guided and brought boats to safe harbor is a good reason to paint them. Painting your own canvas from home, or with a group of friends or students has become a very trendy pastime and a great way to get some art therapy and practice in. I will give you step-by-step instructions on painting your own lighthouse, along with a list of supplies needed. It dries fast and you can have a completed painting in very little time if you like to work that way. So, with your lighthouse, the first thing you need to decide is the color of the lighthouse itself and whether you want a night or day sky. The first step is to lightly draw the lighthouse, waves, and rocks or whatever you choose to put around the bottom of it, in pencil. I would advise you to look online at some lighthouse images to choose the top style for the lighthouse.
